‘The Janets of the world will always survive,’ said Zoë. But even as she spoke her mobile buzzed and fluttered in her pocket.

It was Janet. She was in the infirmary. She’d got caught up in a riot of some kind. The doctors were keeping her in overnight and possibly longer. She had concussion and they didn’t want her brain to swell.

‘But she hasn’t got a brain to swell,’ said Zoë, and the others giggled before they shushed her for her wickedness. She didn’t think Janet had heard.
